In this extraordinary concert, OFUNAM offers a journey through the diversity of American orchestral music. It begins with the Concerto for violin and orchestra The Red Violin by John Corigliano, who in 1999 composed the music for the film of the same name; a story that follows the journeys of a mysterious violin through different eras. In 2003, Corigliano elaborated a violin concerto based on themes from the original soundtrack, which will be performed by Canadian violinist Lara St. John. The second part of the concert includes Jessie Montgomery’s Caught by the Wind. This 2016 piece, is inspired by cyclical motion, both from a bicycle trip by her brother to promote ecological awareness, and the sight of a wind-broken branch she encountered during a ride. The concert will conclude with the Suite from Aaron Copland’s ballet Appalachian Spring, a work composed between 1943 and 1944 commissioned by choreographer Martha Graham. The work tells the story of a young couple in a rural Pennsylvania community in the 19th century. It was adapted as an orchestral suite in 1945.
