Its use in films made Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” an iconic piece of music. Originally, however, it was created in 1936 as the second movement of a string quartet. Like Barber, Grammy-winning composer Jessie Montgomery is from the United States. Her short piece “Starburst” (2012) tells of the explosive birth of new stars in “fastly changing musical colors”, she says.
The Soviet composer Lera Auerbach also once emigrated to democratic America. However, their first string symphony was commissioned by the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra in 2013. The work with the mysterious title “Evening: Memory of the Light” offers an emotional interplay between tragedy and hope.
The chamber symphony of the Turkish composer and pianist Fazil Say, which was created in 2015, develops a completely different sound. She takes us on a journey through time through the music of his homeland, which captivates us through her different styles. The program is classically rounded off with the cello concerto in A minor by the Bach son Carl Philipp Emanuel, which was created around 1750 – a pioneering work of the genus cello concert.
At 5:15 p.m., a free concert introduction with Dr. Matthias Corvin will take place in the upper foyer.
Concert duration: approx. 110 min (including break)
